St. Croix Sailing Team member Steven Hardee attended the annual 2016 Hyannis Yacht Club Regatta in Massachusetts this month. In optimist blue fleet, Steven Hardee earned a hard fought second place victory. Congratulations Steven!

REGATTA RESULTS

St. Croix Sailing Team sailors Atlee Kohl, Lake Sanford, and Mathieu Dales joined St. Thomas Sailors Mia Nicolosi and Julian Van Den Driessche to represent the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) at the Optimist World Championship 2016 in Vilmoura, Portugal this last week. Under the Virgin Islands team coach, Tino Galan, the sailors competed in low, shifty wind conditions. In fleet racing, Atlee Kohl finished 124th, Mathieu Dale finished 191st, and Lake Sanford finished 200th in the world. Congratulations sailors on your great performance!

St. Croix Sailing Team attends International Optimist Regatta (IOR)

REGATTA RESULTS

The St. Croix Sailing Team under coach Tino Galan attended the St. Thomas International Optimist Regatta (IOR) this last week. Lake Sanford, Mathieu Dale and Steven Hardee competed in the championship fleet. In a summer event that attracts stateside talent, Lake Sanford finished in the top 10. JJ Klempten represented the St. Croix Sailing Team in the green fleet. Great job Sailors!


 

BVI Dinghy Championship

REGATTA RESULTS

The annual British Virgin Islands Dinghy Championship was held at Nanny Cay on the island of Tortola this weekend and represented the third and final regatta that makes up the Triple Crown (BVI - BVI Dinghy Championship, STT - VIODA Opti Championship, STX - Crucian Open). Under the instruction of Coach Tino Galan, Taylor Hasson placed 1st in the Laser 4.7 Series while Ethan Hanley placed 3rd in the Laser Radial Series. Mathieu Dale's combined scores earned him an overall Triple Crown 3rd place victory (This includes his 2nd Place Red Fleet win in this weekend's Regatta). Also In the Optimist Advanced Series, Lola Kohl placed 3rd in the White Fleet. Other Advanced Fleet sailors participating in the regatta included: Lake Sanford, Dawson Kohl, Atlee Kohl, Steven Hardee, Milo Miller and Carson Oakley. Under the instruction of Coach Alison Sobeck, Green Fleet sailors Elyssa Franklin, Ariana Schwartz, Sean Hiddleston, Parker Younger, JJ Klempen, Rodney Moorehead, Adele Sanford, Katy Armstrong, Ryan Moorehead, Malea Elvins, Alexandra Tonin, and Sierra Franklin competed in the event. The generous donation of vessels 'Double A' provided by Chris & Kerri Hanley, 'Knot My Problem' provided by Warren & Elizabeth Mosler and 'Zingara' provided by Steve & Katherine Hardee allowed a record 22 sailors from the St. Croix Sailing Team to attend and compete in the BVI Dinghy Championship.


 

Sailors Embrace Emergency Medical Training

The St. Croix Yacht Club (SCYC) hosted an emergency medical certification workshop this weekend for sailors, parents and the community. Participants learned how to properly use an AED, perform CPR, and treat victims with other life threatening injuries. The SCYC, SCST, and YSA are committed to safety on and off the water. Most of the Varsity GHCDS High School Team sailors and nearly all of the Advanced Opti Team sailors took and passed the course, receiving their CPR-C certification. Please note that the St. Croix Yacht Club's AED is located in the woman's rest room.


 

GHCDS Panthers Compete at High School Club 420 Qualifier

The GHCDS High School Sailing team travelled this past weekend to the SAISA team race and Baker Cup qualifier held at Lauderdale Yacht Club in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, April 30th - May 1st, 2016. Eight district teams competed in the Club 420 double-handed sailboat in 62 races with a finals round on Sunday. Skippers Ethan Hanley, Taylor Hasson and Sarah Hardee competed in the intense two day event with their respective crew members Megan Armstrong, Kate Klempen and Hannah Tonin. Antilles High School of St. Thomas, VI and St. Thomas Aquinas High School of Fort Lauderdale, FL placed 1st and 2nd in the finals and will continue on to the 2016 National Bakers Cup Championship in Washington state. Coach Santiago Galan commented about his team "I am very proud of these kids... they are a young team and they gave it their best. We learned a lot this weekend about team racing and I look forward to traveling with them in the future”.

2016 Crucian Open Regatta

REGATTA RESULTS


Nearly 60 sailors from St. Croix, St. Thomas, St John, Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands, competed in the 2016 Crucian Open Regatta which took place over this past weekend on beautiful Teague Bay. Wind conditions were a light 4-8 knots and shifty, providing challenging conditions for competitors.

In the two handed Club 420 Fleet, skipper Taylor Hasson and crew member Kate Klempen took 1st place. Skipper Ethan Hanley and crew Megan Armstrong took 2nd while skipper Sarah Hardee and crew Hannah Tonin placed 3rd. Skipper Rose Kleeger and crew Olivia Hanley finished in 4th place. Rotating crew members included Lucy Klempen and Cade Legrande.

The single handed Optimist Advanced Fleet had 24 junior sailors and were able to complete 10 races over the course of the weekend. In White Fleet, Lola Kohl earned a 1st place victory. In Red Fleet, Mathieu Dale fought for a 3rd place victory. Other Advanced Fleet sailors competing from the St. Croix Sailing Team included: Atlee Kohl, Dawson Kohl, Lake Sanford, Steven Hardee and Carson Oakley.

The beginner Optimist Green Fleet consisted of 22 junior sailors, who were able to complete 16 races over two days of racing. The 1st place victor in Green Fleet was Milo Miller with tons of bullets! Other Green Fleet sailors from the St. Croix Sailing Team included: Elyssa Franklin, Ariana Schwartz, Sean Hiddleston, Parker Younger, Rodney Moorhead, Alexandra Tonin, Malea Evans, Adele Sanford, Patrick Boring, Sierra Franklin and Hannah Neil.

2016 Optimist South American Championships

Five junior sailors represented the US Virgin Islands in Salinas Ecuador for the 2016 Optimist South American Championships. This highly competitive annual event attracts top junior sailors from around the world which this year included 160 entrants from 15 countries.  Mathieu Dale and Steven Hardee qualified from the St. Croix Sailing Team and competed along side three other juniors from the St. Thomas.  The international competition consisted of five days of fleet racing and one day of team racing.  In fleet racing, Mathieu Placed 3rd in the Bronze Fleet. In team racing, the US Virgin Islands which included Mathieu, Steven, Mia, Julian and Gillian, placed 3rd overall. Congratulations sailors on your outstanding performance in South America!

VIODA Opti Championship

REGATTA RESULTS

The Virgin Islands Opti and Dinghy Association (VIODA) held their annual Opti Championship this weekend at the St. Thomas Yacht Club (STYC). Coached by Tino Galan and his assistant Florencia, the Optimist class is designed for juniors 15 years of age and under. Challenging low wind conditions were overcome by Lake Sanford who placed 4th and Mathieu Dale who placed 6th overall in the Advance Fleet. Lola Kohl placed second in White Fleet. Other St. Croix Sailing Team Advanced Fleet participants included Steven Hardee, Atlee Kohl, Dawson Kohl and Carson Oakley. In Green Fleet, Milo Miller dominated with 9 first place bullets leading to his 1st place showing at the event. Other Green Fleet participants include Katy Armstrong, Adele Sanford and Arrianna Schwartz. Congratulations to all the junior sailors who represented our island and the St. Croix Yacht Club at this prestigious junior sailing event.


 

SCYC Hosts the Bill Chandler Memorial Regatta

Congratulations to Milo Miller & Carson Oakley who placed first while Jeff Dykstra placed second in the Bill Chandler Sunfish Memorial Regatta namesake Class. In the Club 420 Class, Atlee Kohl & Olivia Hanley placed first and were awarded the 'Top Junior Sailor' male and female, respectively. Ethan Hanley & Lake Sanford placed a close second while Mathieu Dale & Steven Hardee placed third. Dawson Kohl & Lucy Klempen, Rose Kleeger & Megan Armstrong and Sarah Hardee & Kate Klempen placed fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively. In the Optimist Dinghy Class, Lola Kohl Placed first in Advanced Fleet while Elyssa Franklin placed first, Shawn Hiddleston placed second, and Katie Armstrong placed third in Green Fleet. In the Laser Class, Taylor Hasson placed first. A special thank you to Lisa Chandler who hand made the trophies, the Stanton Family who coordinated the race committee, St. Croix Sailing Team coach Tino Galan and the new St. Croix Yacht Club Board for hosting this great event!

St. Croix Sailing Team attends Pan Pepin International Dinghy Regatta

REGATTA RESULTS

The St. Croix Youth Sailing Association sent 17 students and Coach Tino Galan to the annual MLK Regatta held in St. Thomas this weekend. In the two handed Club 420 event, skipper Ethan Hanley and crew Taylor Hasson as well as skipper Rose Kleeger and crew Olivia Hanley and Hanna Tonin placed 2nd. In the single handed Optimist Pram event, Atlee Kohl placed 2nd in Red Fleet, Lake Sanford placed 2nd in Blue Fleet, Lola Kohl placed 1st in White Fleet and Milo Miller placed 2nd in Green Fleet. Others on the St. Croix Youth Sailing Team that competed included: Joey Croney, Mathieu Dale, Steven Hardee, Dawson Kohl, Carson Oakley, Adele Sanford, Ariana Schwartz and Alex Tonin.
